Introduction

The UK is now governed by Coalition Government, led by Mr David Cameron of the Conservative Party; This website is dedicated to monitoring and discussing the performance, conduct, successes and failures of the Cameron Coalition.

The 2010 general election resulted in a “hung parliament”, meaning that no single party gained enough seats in paliament to guarantee they could fulfil their election manifesto. It was necessary therefore that two or more parties reached an agreement that would ensure a majority vote in parliament on mutually agreed key legislative changes.

The Liberal Democrats held the key to creating an overall majority and although they did hold discussions with the Labour Party, the only assured majority could be obtained by a deal with the Conservatives. Despite the huge ideological gulf that exists in some areas of policy between the parties, an agreement was duly reached.

The agreement was formally defined by the jointly produced document “programme for government”. In terms of Government posts, the Liberal Democrats hold five positions, most notably that of the Deputy Prime Minister held by Nick Clegg the leader of the Liberal Democrat Party.

A coalition of this nature is unique in British politics and there is some scepticism about its ability to maintain the coherence and unity that it has shown in the first month of its tenure; There are policy decisions to be made that will surely test the relationship at some point in the future.

Included in the site at the moment are some background facts about the coalition (The Agreement and The Team), plus:

  • A “Discussion” section where topical articles will be posted on a regular basis and members can post their comments;
  • A customisable “News-Feed” facility that allows members to view a number of news feeds and/or blogs all on the one page;
  • A “Stats” page that provides a quick look at the UK’s headline economic indicators to check on the health of the nation under the Coalition;

Registering as a member is fast and easy and only asks for your e-mail address and a username. You can maintain your account using the “Admin” link at the bottom of each page.
